Murder of Jeyaraj and his son Beniks by police in Tuticorin, TN


The death of a father-son duo allegedly in police custody in Tamil Nadu's Tuticorin district has caused a furore in the state.
59-year-old P Jeyaraj and his 31-year-old son J Beniks were picked up for questioning by the Sathankulam police for keeping their mobile accessories shop open for just 15 minutes beyond the official closure time of 9.00 pm during the lockdown on June 19, 2020. 
They were severely thrashed by the police while in custody, leading to their deaths.
While Fenix fell ill and died at the Kovilpatti General Hospital on June 22, his father died on the morning of June 23.
Five police personnel, including a Sub-Inspector, were arrested in the Tuticorin custodial deaths case on Wednesday, 2020-07-08. All of them were posted at the Sathankulam Police Station where Jeyaraj and his son Beniks were allegedly tortured by the police on the night of 19 June 2020. Media reports have suggested that the duo were brutally sexually assaulted in police custody.
