The Supreme Court on 2026-01-05 rejected bail for Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the 2020 Delhi riots case. Delivering the verdict, Justices Aravind Kumar and NV Anjaria said that the material against the two accused shows planning and that their conduct prima facie constitutes a terrorist act. The court noted that the actions of Khalid and Imam disrupted services and posed a threat to the economy. According to Delhi Police, the conspirators aimed at regime change. The Supreme Court’s decision means both Khalid and Imam will remain in jail.
A bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and NV Anjaria, however, granted bail to five others accused named in the case: Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa Ur Rehman, Mohd Saleem Khan, and Shadab Ahmed.
