West Bengal likely to get a 604-kms RRTS network. 

West Bengal could be set for a major transformation in regional connectivity with a 604-km Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) proposal, placing Kolkata’s Maidan at the centre of a proposed four-corridor network.

🔹 Maidan–Kalyani–Krishnanagar–Mayapur: 135 km

🔹 Maidan–Bardhaman–Durgapur–Asansol: 232 km

🔹 Maidan–Falta–Diamond Harbour–Haldia–Nandigram: 102 km

🔹 Maidan–Santragachi–Kolaghat–Kharagpur–Medinipur: 135 km

The proposal also envisages metro connectivity for Durgapur and Asansol, along with a Maidan–Budge Budge connection.

One of the key ideas is to align the RRTS corridors with existing highways and railway routes, potentially reducing the requirement for fresh land acquisition while making better use of existing transport infrastructure.

A proposed Centre–State Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV), the West Bengal Rapid Transit Corporation (WBRTC), could oversee the development. Before moving ahead, a detailed study covering engineering feasibility, passenger demand and financial viability has been sought.

If implemented, the proposed network could create faster regional connections between Kolkata, Kalyani, Krishnanagar, Bardhaman, Durgapur, Asansol, Haldia, Kharagpur and Medinipur, strengthening Bengal’s wider transport network.

In September 2026, this is only a proposal, and detailed studies and further approvals would be needed before construction or implementation.
