Chidu mocked UPI in 2016.
10 years of UPI, from doubt to global dominance
A decade ago, former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram mocked the Modi government’s push for digital payments.
Today, that vision has become everyday reality. Launched in 2016, UPI has grown from just 1.78 crore transactions in its first year to 24,162 crore transactions in FY 2025–26 - a roughly 13,000-fold rise. It now accounts for nearly 49% of global real-time payments, making UPI the world’s largest real-time payments platform.
From street vendors to global markets, India didn’t just digitise payments, it built a system the world is watching.
10 years of UPI. Billions of transactions, one made-in-India digital revolution.
