Jairam Ramesh defended Sonia's act saying she wanted a chair for Kharge

The complete Vande Mataram was sung at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi on Saturday 2026-08-15 as India celebrated its 80th Independence Day, with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and CPP chairperson Sonia Gandhi in attendance and expressing extreme displeasure. 

A video from the event clearly shows Rahul and Sonia Gandhi signalling for the song to be stopped.

Now that the deshdrohi party is in the eye of a massive public uproar, the Congress has rejected that interpretation, clarifying that Sonia Gandhi was asking for a chair for Mallikarjun Kharge, who had continued standing during the flag-hoisting ceremony.

Jairam Ramesh is trying to bluff to the best of his ability to bail out his godmother!
