Sanjeev Sanyal critiques Indian judiciary

At the Nyaya Nirmaan 2025 event in September 2025, Sanjeev Sanyal, Member of the PM’s Economic Advisory Council, sharply criticised the Indian judiciary. He questioned the use of colonial-era terms like “My Lord” and “prayers” in petitions, calling them outdated. Sanyal also flagged “long vacations” in courts, likening them to the idea of doctors or police shutting down services for weeks. He argued that judicial holidays and the opaque selection process of judges have become a hurdle to India’s progress towards becoming a developed nation. Stressing the urgency of India’s demographic window, he said the country has only two decades to convert growth into prosperity before aging sets in.
